Changing Your Address with Medicare
What Happens to Your Medicare When You Move?
Don't worry, we've got you covered.
You'll learn what you need to do for a Medicare change of address, as well as what options are available to you.
Original Medicare is the Same Everywhere
If you have Original Medicare (Medicare Parts A and B), your health coverage will not change when you move. Medicare is a federal program, so you'll get the same coverage wherever you go. Now, keep in mind that your primary care physician and local hospital might change. So, if you have Medicare and are moving to another state or a new area, you will need to find a doctor that accepts Original Medicare coverage.
Medicare Advantage Plans
If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan and move out of state, there's a chance your coverage could change. Private companies administer Medicare Advantage plans, and they may only cover specific counties or zip codes. Even if your Medicare Advantage plan exists in your new area, the costs and benefits may change. Luckily, when you change addresses, you trigger a Special Enrollment Period (SEP). During this enrollment period, you can see your available Medicare options in your new area.
Medicare Supplement or Medigap
Medicare Supplement plans stay the same, even if you move states, but the cost might change. You do have a few options concerning your Medicare Supplement plan if you move. You can:
- Stick with what you have, potentially with cost changes
- Find a new Medicare Supplement plan
- Or switch to a Medicare Advantage plan available in your new area.
If you're looking to find a new Medicare Supplement plan or switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, we can help you out. We also have an easy-to-use plan comparison tool that you can use.
